Now, even though the 2012 World Series had the lowest average ratings in the sport’s history, more people watched one of those games than the average episode of “The Masked Singer,” but those millions were already familiar with baseball. If you could name the 22nd-most famous cricket player in the world from 2008, I would be flabbergasted.Īmerica is about to be introduced to the 22nd-most famous cricket player in the world from 2008, so to speak. If you could name the most famous cricket player in the world back from 2008, I would be impressed. Right now, most of them have no idea he exists. No, what fascinates me is that pretty soon, millions and millions of Americans are about to be introduced to the concept of Barry Zito. It’s not that we’ve figured out that it’s Zito, and it’s not even that Zito is a contestant, which would ostensibly make A’s and Giants fans pay more attention. This article isn’t about the show, necessarily. I understood that clue! It was written for me! Down the Reddit-hole I went, and more and more clues got stacked on top of each other. I saw someone mention the possibility on Twitter (I don’t remember whom, I’m so sorry), and thought, “No way.” But when my wife and children, regular viewers, sat down to watch it the next week, I heard the “don’t like long walks by the water” clue, and I became hooked. I should point out that I didn’t figure most of this out myself. The identity of the rhinoceros is not in dispute, he typed for the first and last time in his life. Here he is on the show:Īnd here he is on “The Dan Patrick Show”: The rhinoceros also sounds like Barry Zito, which is no minor point. That should probably read “the same ‘track,” because it’s an abbreviation of “soundtrack.” Zito co-wrote a song, “Butterflies,” on the soundtrack to “A Thousand Words.” Robin Thicke also appeared on that soundtrack. In the last episode, he got really specific with his clue:įor his Lego-themed clue, the Rhino presented a clue for Robin Thicke that included the number “1000.” To Thicke, he said “You and I are on the same track. The rhinoceros was also quoted as saying, “Family is very important for success, especially when performing for a king is in your blood,” which is a reference to his parents working with Nat King Cole.Īnother clue was that the rhino pronounced “I do not like long walks by the water.” Buddy, neither do we. There’s been a clue with a guitar that had “Grand Ole Opry” inscribed on the fretboard, a reference to Zito’s time in Nashville with the A’s Triple-A affiliate. In a previous clue package, the rhino was cutting a small hamburger (or “slider”) while wearing a huge diamond ring. There’s a picture of Missouri with a crown, which could be a reference to his wife, a former Miss Missouri, or the way he mowed through the Cardinals in 2012 to win a championship. There are three quarters prominently displayed - 75 cents. They introduce his college roommate, who affects a SoCal cadence (Zito went to UC Santa Barbara and USC).He talks about the criticism he’s received throughout his career,.He’s dressed like a pilot, or an “ace.”.The clues from just this video, in order: I don’t feel like this needs a spoiler warning because the whole point of the show is to figure out the singer’s identity. Viewers vote for their favorite performers, and when someone is voted off, they reveal their identity.Īlong the way, they drop hints about their identity in videos like this: The concept of “The Masked Singer” is that celebrities sing and dance while wearing a ridiculous costume, and everyone has to guess who they are. Technically, we’re not supposed to know that it’s him underneath the rhinoceros mask. Every so often, something will come along in our popular culture that connects all of us.īarry Zito wearing a rhinoceros costume and singing on television is one of those things.Īlmost eight million people watched “The Masked Singer” on Fox last week, which means that a vast cross-section of America will soon be forced to acknowledge the existence of Zito. ![]()
